The University of Portsmouth shares its location with unique historic Dockyard (which back to 1194) Portsmouth’s premiership’s football club and the new national landmark. The Spinnaker Tower, which will become one of Portsmouth’s prime tourist attractions.
The history of the University of Portsmouth dates back to 1870. Since awarded the first degree in 1900, the University maintained its commitment to promoting and maintaining excellence in teaching and research across the five Faculties.
The University is very proud of its extensive research programme (and excellence results in the latest Research Assessment Exercise), its international reputation, and its excellent record of graduate employment.
There are approximately 20,000 students studying a wide range of courses at the University in the heart of Portsmouth’s city. Over 2,500 students come from 80 countries, so you will be among friends from the start.
Location
Portsmouth is located at the southern coastline between Bournemouth and Brighton. London is just 80 minutes away by train. Portsmouth’s central, sheltered position and good travel links to other cities, make it a popular location to live, work, holiday - and study. We have good road and rail connections to London, Heathrow and Gatwick airports, around the South Coast and the Midlands.
The city is five minutes away from the heart of University, making shopping, public transport and leisure facilities very convenient. Modern University buildings blend in with Portsmouth’s historic buildings, such as the Theatre Royal and Park building.
A free University bus service operates throughout the day for the University of Portsmouth’s students and staffs. The bus transport student between the main Guildhall Campus and Langstone Student Village. Portsmouth is also perfect for cycling, as the island is completely flat.
History
The University of Portsmouth was inaugurated in 1992. The former Portsmouth Polytechnic, one of the largest and most successful in the UK, itself grew from the Portsmouth and Gosport School of Science and Arts, founded in 1869.
The University is now at the forefront of a rapidly changing, thriving city, with a modern diverse campus, taking pride in its reputation among students for the friendliness and approachability of its staff, and for the provision of a well structured and supportive learning environment.
Special Achievement
The Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) awarded the university Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning status in two key areas of work.
