Bangor University was founded in 1884, making it one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the UK. For more than 120 years, students from all over the world have graduated from Bangor and progressed to achieve great success in their chosen careers. Today, the University offers over 250 different Undergraduate degrees, more than 150 courses at Postgraduate level and provides the opportunity for research in around 40 unique areas.

Bangor is listed among the top 70 universities in the UK in 15 different subject areas which include Computer Science, Electronic engineering, Finance and Accounting, economics, Agriculture and Forestry, Psychology, Chemistry, Marine Sciences, Sports Science and law. Bangor University is a long established university dedicated to academic excellence. Over half of the departments assessed to date in the teaching quality assessments have received the top rating of 'excellent'.

Bangor University has one of the fairest workload of any UK university according to the now annual Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey (January 2010). There are over 10,000 students, 26 academic schools and over 600 teaching staff.

The City of Bangor

Bangor is located in a breathtaking landscape with panoramic views and is rich with history, culture and charm. The city is home to over 13,500 people and there are currently 10,000 students studying at the University. At the heart of the city is the ancient St Deiniol's Cathedral, one of the oldest cathedral sites in Britain. The Cathedral was founded in 525AD some 70 years before Canterbury.

Bangor University's location, on the doorstep of the Snowdonia National Park, is probably one of the most beautiful university settings in the whole of the UK. Bangor's coastal location means it has impressive views and is connected to the Isle of Anglesey by two picturesque bridges- the Menai Suspension Bridge and the Britannia Bridge.

The University plays an important part in the city's history and identity. It was built in 1884 following funding by local quarrymen who volunteered to give some of their wages towards providing a better standard of higher education.
